Out of Control

In the ship’s gym, Rannn smashed his fist into another officer’s jaw, hearing the male bellow from the force of the hit compounded by the puncture wounds from Rannn’s bone protrusions. The officer hit his knees before falling over.

Grey blood soaked his arms, and still, the fire inside him refused to settle. His lungs filled over and over as he looked for the next fighter.

No one.

All of them were on the floor, more broken than when they’d started, one with a broken horn, all bleeding, some unconscious. Finally. Now Rannn could go find his wife and talk to her about…what was it she was hiding from him again?

Oh, yeah, the fact that her mother was a high-ranking Sennite. He wanted to know who it was and why she hadn’t told him. This time when they talked, he was going to do so in his office so he could listen to her entire past without distraction.

It was uncommon in a Yunkin union to know so little about a partner’s bloodline. Not that this was that kind of marriage. But still, Nue was his, and she could have at least told him that she was a hybrid.

Hell, thinking about it now, he didn’t even know how old she was. What if she was just a pup? Damn, he hoped not. He was already one hundred and twenty-one years old. He didn’t want to be married a young twenty-year-old.

Scanning the Yunkins on the mat, Rannn saw they were mainly from Weapons and Tactical Response so they had been trained to fight. And they’d fought hard. But they all needed to go back to medical now.

He debated whether he should help them or tell Ansel to come and get them. He preferred to leave them so he could go find Nue.

From the far side of the gym, he heard clapping. Turning, he saw Clalls headed his way. When he stopped outside the fighting ring, Clalls used a finger to point to his arms. “Gotta say, Cap. I love the new look. Black bones are rare, even for Night Demons. Also, considered bad luck. But who cares about any of that?”

How long had Clalls been watching? “What do you want?”

“Me? Isn’t this the Night Demon-Yunkin support meeting? Or is that next Thursday? I always forget.”

It was very un-Yunkin to not take things seriously. That was probably why Clalls was so annoying to his past commanders and captains. There were pages and pages of complaints.

But for whatever reason, Clalls didn’t bother Rannn now. Before he’d mutated, he respected Clalls—to a point—but he never felt at ease around him.

Maybe it wasn’t that he felt easy. Perhaps it was that he didn’t worry as much anymore.

Clalls stepped over the unconscious bodies, examining them closely. When he saw one officer with long teeth like he had, Clalls frowned. “I never thought I’d say this, but I look way better than he does with long teeth.”

“It’s just a temporary thing. He’ll be back to himself soon.”

The Demon didn’t even look fazed as he continued stepping over bodies, eyeing them from head to toe.
